PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Mission Statement

The main mission of the PM&R training program is to train high quality, professional, physiatrist who make lasting impacts on the field of PM&R through leadership positions in academia, research, healthcare, and education.

Provide residents with an advanced and comprehensive cognitive and clinical education that will facilitate them to become competent physiatrist, which will meet the requirements to eligible to become board certified upon the completion of the program and inspire them to practice with excellence as leaders in their field.

Overall Goals and Objectives

To accomplish this, we provide residents with level-specific training and guidance not only in the fundamentals of evidence-based clinical practice, but also in the basic science principles that underlie the primary components of PM&R, and exposure to multiple healthcare delivery systems.

Technical skill is fundamental to the successful training of our residents and is taught in a clinical setting. Every resident in the PM&R Training Program is expected to receive the same level of technical training.

Our program’s clinical training includes the development of clinical and technical skills, experience in self-evaluation, systems based practice, the development of personal communication skills, teaching, and professionalism.

The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Training Program is designed to provide basic and advanced knowledge and experience in the practice of Physiatry. The program will familiarize PM&R residents with all aspects of clinical practice, treatment and rehabilitation strategies, including professional clinical experience in both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation settings.

The PM&R program leads to eligibility for examination and certification by the American Board of PM&R. In essence the Program goals are to:

  1. Provide the residents with a comprehensive program, which enable them to grow as competent Physiatrists holding the highest academic, clinical, ethical and professional standards of medicine.
  2. To provide the resident with an environment that promotes the acquisition of the proper knowledge, clinical judgment, competencies, and attitudes essential to the practice of PM&R.
  3. Educate residents in all areas of knowledge, clinical services, research, technical skills, and professional attitudes; in order to graduate experienced Physiatrists that meet the requirements to become certified.
  4. Train self-directed Physiatrists with habits of life-long learning to build upon their knowledge, clinical skills and professionalism.
  5. Produce physicians who are able to provide a high quality, cost-effective patient care specialized in PM&R to the individual in all the cycles of life, in diverse clinical settings and into the context of the family and the community.
  6. Encourage our graduates to practice in medically underserved communities and areas of critical need in our state of Florida when they complete their training.
  7. Incorporate the ACGME Competency-Based program objectives into the curriculum.
