PROGRAM DESIGN
The main mission of the General Surgery training program is to train high quality, professional, surgeons who make lasting impacts on the field of General Surgery through leadership positions in academia, research, healthcare, and education. Provide residents with an advanced and comprehensive cognitive and clinical education that will facilitate them to become competent surgeons, which will meet the requirements to eligible to become board certified upon the completion of the program and inspire them to practice with excellence as leaders in their field. To accomplish this, we provide residents with level-specific training and guidance not only in the fundamentals of evidence-based clinical practice, the basic science principles that underlie the primary components of General Surgery, and exposure to multiple healthcare delivery systems

TRAINING SITES
The experience at our progam’s home base, Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) provides comprehensive and a well-structured cognitive and procedural clinical education in General Surgery. During General Surgery rotation at LCH, all residents see a variety of general surgical and sub-specialized patients with pathology involving the need for General Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Breast Surgery, Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary, Bariatric Surgery, Hand Surgery, Dermatosurgery, imaged-guided procedures, and endoscopic procedures.
At Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (NCH) , Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) residents spend 1 month in their second and fourth post-graduate year in Pediatric Surgery.
The residents actively participate in the care of all surgical patients. They perform surgery under direct attending faculty supervision and manage patients both preoperatively and postoperatively. Patients range from newborns requiring peri-operative intensive care to patients aged 18. Surgical experience at NCH provides exposure to minimally invasive and open surgical cases involving thoracic and abdominal pathology. This institution is ACGME accredited with substantial well-trained certified faculty, many of which have clinical appointments at the University of Miami.
At Delray Medical Center (DMC) residents rotate through several different services.
Post-graduate years 2, 3, 4 and 5 will have dedicated rotations in Vascular Surgery, Trauma Surgery/Critical Care, and Acute Care Surgery (ACS) as depicted in the block schedule.
DMC is an ACGME-approved facility with which we have obtained integration to provide our residents dedicated rotations through the aforementioned services. It is also a level-1 trauma center and an approved cardiac and vascular institution with state-of-the-art technology hybrid rooms providing robotic endovascular capabilities.
At Cleveland Clinic Florida (CCF), PGY 4 residents rotate for 1 month. During that month our residents are involved in Transplant Procedures.
During this rotation, residents experience a high volume of liver and kidney transplant surgery, including off-site organ harvesting as well as responsibility for the perioperative ICU and immunosuppressive management of transplant patients.
