The orthopaedic surgery residency program, at Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) obtained ACGME initial accreditation in January 2021 with four residents approved per post-graduate year. The mission of the Larkin Community Hospital Orthopaedic Surgery residency program is to produce outstanding surgeons who exemplify the highest ideals of our profession by demonstrating excellence in academics, research, surgical skills, and team-based, community-focused healthcare services. Furthermore, to prepare residents for independent practice, board certification, fellowship, and beyond. Our program aims to achieve, in accordance with the common program requirements, the following: engendering and fostering an attitude and mentality of excellence, and striving for academic excellence; foster a learning environment that promotes progressive responsibility and graduated autonomy; deliver a core curriculum allowing residents to gain knowledge that reflects understanding in the art of inquiry and science of discovery, and provide clinical experiences allowing residents to learn and practice delivering team-based care that reflects respect for patient values and preferences.

The orthopedic residency program, at Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) in Miami, Florida, obtained AOA accreditation in July 2013 with four residents per year (a total of 20 positions were approved). Larkin Hospital has become one of 12 designated Statutory Teaching Hospitals in Florida and the largest teaching hospital for osteopathic physicians (D.O.) in the United States, offering the largest number of training programs (32 different specialties in total). The expansion of graduate medical education programs at LCH continues to demonstrate the hospital’s commitment to training the next generation of physicians.

The orthopedic residency program is based at Larkin Community Hospital. This unit was created in September 2013 and has as its mission statement to develop a world-class team of professionals to deliver the highest quality of musculoskeletal care focusing on patient satisfaction and cost-effectiveness. At the hospital, we use the latest techniques, state of art technology and instrumentation with advanced robotics. Here at Larkin, we have developed a unique community based orthopedic program for residents focused on three main components including patient care, education, and research.

Patient Care

Patient care is the central component of the model we are trying to teach our residents. From non-surgical management to complex arthroplasty revisions, we emphasize on compassionate, efficient and cost-effective care for our patients in both the outpatient and inpatient setting.

Education

Our commitment to resident education is reflected in the daily protected time for lectures including journal clubs, basic science, and clinical practice. Residents are exposed early to the operating room environment with increasing involvement based on competency. They also rotate through other institutions and are exposed to a variety of musculoskeletal pathology and different practice models. The leadership at these centers are all well established, board-certified orthopedic surgeons and experts on their fields and include Jorge Orbay MD at the Miami Hand and Upper Extremity Institute, Thomas Shuler MD at Carillion Medical Center Clinic (Level 1 trauma center), Roy Sanders MD at Tampa General Hospital (Level 1 trauma center).

Research

We believe that a well-balanced program should include a strong research component. These efforts are supported by the research department, which includes an ongoing prospective surgical registry. During the past years, the research produced in this unit included more than 35 podiums and poster presented at the Annual Meeting of the Florida Orthopedic society (FOS), American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). The research being done at the center has resulted not only in better outcomes but also significantly compliments resident education.
