PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Our program offers a variety of rotations relevant to the practice of hematology and oncology throughout the three years. The goal is to become a well-rounded hematologist/oncologist that is able to practice independently but also thoroughly utilize other subspecialties such as radiation oncology and palliative care to offer patients the best and most appropriate care.
ACGME Competency Goal Objectives
First year fellows must be able to provide patient healthcare that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
First year fellows are expected to learn the practice of health promotion, disease prevention, diagnosis, care and treatment of men and women from adolescence to old age, during health and all stages of disease.
First year fellows must gain expertise/experiences in the following:
- Evaluation of patients with a wide variety of hematologic disorders, and the formulation of diagnostic and treatment plans for these patients.
- Delivery of chemotherapy through all therapeutic routes and apheresis procedures.
- Serial measurement of tumor masses and assessment of tumor imaging by CT, MRI, PET, and other nuclear imaging.
- Identification of normal blood elements in the peripheral blood and bone marrow (initially with the assistance of the supervising attending).
Second year fellows are expected to perform the above efficiently.
Third year fellows are expected to perform the above independently with limited need for attending supervision.
The successful completion of these objectives will be assessed by direct observation of the supervising attending as reflection in the attending’s evaluation of the fellow at the end of the rotation.
