PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The length of the Dermatology residency program is three years. The Dermatology program provides an educational and practical experience that results in the delivery of superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.
The Larkin Community Hospital (LCH)/NSU-COM Osteopathic Residency Training in Dermatology shall be three (3) year postgraduate training program, following an AOA approved internship to meet the requirements for certification. Applicants must be graduates of an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Accredited college of Osteopathic Medicine, and be member of the AOA. The program prepares residents to provide dermatologic care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. We instruct themes related to anatomy, physiology, embryology, entomology allergy, virology, bacteriology, mycology, oncology, parasitology, biochemistry, genetics, histology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, serology, photobiology and principles of therapy by physical agents. Our didactic training focuses on the curriculum upon dermatopathology, skin microbiology, and immunodermatology. The program encourages residents to participate in assigned professional meetings and events, such the Dermatopathology scholarship program, the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology annual & midyear meetings, the American Academy of Dermatology meetings, Scripps surgical course, Galderma slide review, the Florida Society of Dermatology & Dermatological Surgery meeting, Aesthetics conferences and any other dermatology conference.
Our dermatology residency program is ACGME-accredited and currently has graduates from Osteopathic Medical Schools and both domestic and foreign Allopathic Medical Schools. Our program has dedicated Education/Didactics directed towards helping our residents optimally perform on the ABD (American Board of Dermatology) Basic Exam (PGY-2 residents), pass the ABD Core Exams (Dermatopathology, Medical Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology, Surgical Dermatology) for PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents, and prepare for the Applied Exam upon graduation. Education/Didactics includes Weekly Clinical-Pathological Correlation sessions with Dermatopathologists, Weekly Kodachrome sessions, Monthly Journal Clubs, and Monthly Grand Rounds. Larkin Community Hospital has an ACGME-approved Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship which has previously accepted our graduates. Our residents attend the Annual AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) Meeting and are partially reimbursed by Larkin Community Hospital for registration fees, travel, and accommodations. Our PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents are invited to Real World Dermatology for Residents Conference in Las Vegas, NV with all travel and accommodations paid for.
