PROGRAM DESIGN

Program Goals

Provide an extensive and comprehensive training program that adheres to the ACGME requirements for fellowship training in Allergy and Immunology.
Provide a supportive learning environment for specialized training in Allergy and Immunology within a system that affords a safe high quality patient care for all ages.
Produce knowledgeable physicians for the independent, conscientious and effective practice of Allergy and Immunology.
Prepare the graduating osteopathic physician to sit for the examination for Board Certification of Added Qualifications in Allergy and Immunology.
Provide qualified physicians with an extensive educational training environment assorted in both didactics and clinical experience.
Expose trainees to a wide range of career opportunities available in the area of academics, research, clinical practice, and administration.
Provide fellows with a wide scope, sufficient volume and variety of clinical cases to hone the skills necessary for the patient care of patients.
Encourage our graduates to practice in medically underserved communities and areas of critical need in our state of Florida when they complete their training.
Promote lifelong learning habits, and critical evaluation of the contemporary literature.
Supervise the fellow’s progressive responsibilities for patient care with ongoing exposure to the fundamentals of the core competencies (OMM, Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Practice Based Learning and Improvement, Professionalism, and Systems Based Practice).
Promote excellence in medical education, high quality patient care and scholarly activity.

Program Objectives

To provide a comprehensive educational experience in Allergy and Immunology.
Guarantee that graduating fellows possess the clinical competencies and knowledge necessary for independent practice in diverse clinical settings.
Prepare the graduating physician to sit for examination that conducts to Board Certification in Allergy and Immunology.
Provide remarkable learning experiences within an educational environment favorable to the achievement of the program educational goals and objectives.
Provide the fellow with supplementary training in the branches of osteopathic medicine that are of special concern to Allergy and Immunology specialists.
Develop the fellow’s teaching skills; as a central part of the curriculum, enabling the trainees to perform a leadership role in disseminating the principles and practices of the rapidly developing field of Allergy and Immunology.
To advance the development of physicians who practice critical thinking including an evidence-based approach in all aspects of their medical specialty.
Educate the fellows to understand that biological, psychological and social factors play a significant role in human functioning in the context of disease or illness.
Guarantee an appropriate balance of our fellow’s physical, emotional and educational needs.
Support the trainees scientific and research endeavors.
Provide regular academic instruction in the form of formal Didactic Sessions, Journal Clubs, and opportunities to attend national conferences as approved by the program.
Maintain a work setting that is conducive to teamwork, demonstrating the healthcare industry commitment to adhere to ethical principles and business practices.
Promote compassion and integrity in the application of the trainees’ knowledge and experience to the diverse medical problems, patient demographic and cultural background of human beings that supersedes self-interest.
Ensure that each fellow can professionally manage direct patient care and demonstrate competence in clinical decision-making, upon successful completion of the program.
Provide educational opportunities for the trainees to progressively expand his/her teaching skills.
Train the fellows to develop professional responsibility, adherence to ethical principles and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
To provide educational experiences so fellows are able to achieve the following competencies:

  1. PATIENT CARE – Trainees shall be able to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for the treatment of health problems and the promotion of health.
  2. MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE – Trainees shall demonstrate knowledge about established and evolving biomedical, clinical, and cognate (e.g. epidemiological and social-behavioral) sciences and the application of this knowledge to patient care.
  3. PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING AND IMPROVEMENT – Trainees shall be able to investigate and evaluate and improve their patient care practice, as well as to appraise and assimilate scientific evidence based medicine.
  4. INTERPERSONAL AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Trainees shall be able to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange and teaming with patients, their patients families, and professional associates.
  5. PROFESSIONALISM – Fellows will demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities, adherence to ethical principles, and sensitivity to a diverse patient population.
  6. SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE – Trainees shall demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care and the ability to effectively call on system resources to provide care that is of optimal value.
