PROGRAM DESIGN

The Larkin Community Hospital Neurology Residency Program is four-year categorical program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that combines the best of the academic medical center’s neurosciences teaching and research mission with the supportive and friendly environment of a community hospital. The program has been structured to supply the resident with a comprehensive postdoctoral training in Neurology by combining teaching, clinical service, compassionate patient care, and research. The practice of neurology includes that branch of medical science which deals with the neurological system, both normal and diseased. It includes all accepted therapies, assessments, and diagnostic studies. The resident, upon successful completion of this program, will be eligible for board certification in Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Our institution provides an ethical, professional, and educational background in which the curricular requirements, as well as the pertinent requirements for the residents’ work environment, scholarly activities, and core competencies can be achieved. Training incorporates the application of diagnostic and therapeutic measures as they relate to the total care of the patient.

We are committed to maintain a balance between education and service, as evidenced by work hour schedules inclusive of academic and research opportunities and attendance at clinical training and educational activities. Educational standards to be maintained and core competencies to be instilled agree with the ACGME requirements. These basic standards apply in the same way with respect to definitions and purposes, selection of residents, responsibilities of residents, and responsibilities of the Program Director and faculty.

Throughout the program, significant time is spent by the resident in a well-organized curriculum, including seminars, teaching conferences by the faculty and visiting lecturers, continuous case conferences, journal clubs, and individual supervision. Advancement to a higher level will be based upon the excellence of performance and the achievement of the core competencies done in the previous educational year.

Upon completion of this program, residents will be prepared to either enter neurology practice or continue into subspecialty fellowship training. Criteria for graduation include successful achievement of the program’s goals and objectives set forth in all essential teaching rotation
