PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The length of the Dermatology residency program is three years. The Dermatology program provides an educational and practical experience that results in the delivery of superior specialized care to patients with diseases of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes.

The Larkin Community Hospital (LCH) Main Campus – South Miami Residency Training in Dermatology is a three (3) year ACGME postgraduate training program, following an ACGME approved internship to meet the requirements for certification. The program prepares residents to provide dermatologic care to pediatric, adult and geriatric patients. We instruct themes related to anatomy, physiology, embryology, entomology allergy, virology, bacteriology, mycology, oncology, parasitology, biochemistry, genetics, histology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, serology, photobiology and principles of therapy by physical agents. Our didactic training focuses on the curriculum upon dermatopathology, skin microbiology, and immunodermatology. The program encourages residents to participate in assigned professional meetings and events, such as the Dermatopathology scholarship program, the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology annual meetings, the American Academy of Dermatology meetings, Scripps surgical course, Galderma slide review, the Florida Academy of Dermatology, Aesthetics conferences and any other dermatology conference.

Our dermatology residency program is ACGME-accredited and currently has graduates from Osteopathic Medical Schools and both domestic and foreign Allopathic Medical Schools. Our program has dedicated Education/Didactics directed towards helping our residents optimally perform on the ABD (American Board of Dermatology) Basic Exam (PGY-2 residents), pass the ABD Core Exams (Dermatopathology, Medical Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology, Surgical Dermatology) for PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents, and prepare for the Applied Exam upon graduation. Education/Didactics includes Weekly Clinical-Pathological Correlation sessions with Dermatopathologists, Weekly Kodachrome sessions, Monthly Journal Clubs, and Monthly Grand Rounds. Larkin Community Hospital has an ACGME-approved Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship which has previously accepted our graduates. Our residents attend the Annual AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) Meeting and are partially reimbursed by Larkin Community Hospital for registration fees, travel, and accommodations. Our PGY-3 and PGY-4 residents are invited to the Real World Dermatology for Residents Conference in Las Vegas, NV with all travel and accommodations paid for. Future plans for the residency program include a rural dermatology track.
